How it works
-
Pick the apps that eat your day.
TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, games. You tick them in Apple's own list, and they lock right away.
-
Walk.
Every step counts from the first one. There is no daily goal to clear. At the recommended rate, 1,000 steps earn 10 minutes on your locked apps.
-
Spend it 10 minutes at a time.
Open a locked app and its lock screen shows your balance. Spend 10 minutes and you're in. Short on steps, it tells you how many more.
Who it's for
- People whose screen time doubles on the days they never leave the couch.
- People who have installed three app blockers and turned all three off by Thursday.
- People who would walk more if their phone gave them a reason.

Easy or Hard
Easy
30minutes to
start the day
- Start every day with 30 free minutes.
Hard
0minutes to
start the day
- Start every day at zero.
- Stuck? Borrow 10 minutes from tomorrow, once a day.
Your steps and your time on locked apps, day by day.
The fine print
- Easier waits until tomorrow.
- Pick an easier rate, switch to Easy or unlock an app, and the change starts at midnight. Making it stricter happens right away. The moment you most want a cheaper deal is usually the moment you're standing at a locked app.
- Time comes in 10-minute blocks.
- A block only burns while you're inside a locked app, and it ends an hour after you spend it. Thirty minutes is three separate decisions.
- Midnight resets the balance.
- Unspent minutes don't roll over, so there's no stockpile to raid on the weekend.
- Walking is the only way in.
- No delay screens, no breathing exercises, no streaks, no lectures.
Your steps stay on your iPhone on their own.
Schlep never sees which apps you open or for how long. iOS keeps those numbers in a sandbox the app can't read. You don't need an account, and if you make one, it saves your deal, never your step count.
Questions
What does it cost?
Schlep is a monthly or yearly subscription, billed by Apple. The App Store page lists the prices. You can cancel any time from Settings on your iPhone.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No. Your iPhone counts your steps. If you wear an Apple Watch, its steps count too, through Apple Health.
What if I really need an app?
Easy mode starts every day with 30 free minutes. Hard mode lets you borrow 10 minutes from tomorrow, once a day. Turning off Schlep's Screen Time access, or deleting the app, removes every lock at once.
Can I change which apps are locked?
Yes, in Settings, Locked Apps. Locking more apps applies right away. Unlocking one waits until the next day.
Does it work on Android or iPad?
No. Schlep is for iPhone, running iOS 17 or later.
Something isn't working.
In the app, open Settings, then Apps not locking? or Steps not counting? Each page checks the permission involved and gives you the fix. Still stuck? The support page has more, or email ryankrane@me.com.
